Three Questions About Faith & Healing

Faith is the cornerstone of the Christian walk. It is not just a belief but a way of life that governs our actions, thoughts, and decisions. In Mark 11:22 (NKJV), Jesus succinctly commands, “Have faith in God.” This directive is not merely an encouragement but a vital principle for living a life pleasing to God. Let’s delve into what it means to live by faith and how it influences every aspect of our lives, including healing, a topic often addressed by Jesus himself.

Understanding Faith Through Romans 14:23

Romans 14:23 highlights the essence of faith in our daily lives:

  • NIV: “But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.”
  • NLT: “But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.”
  • KJV: “And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.”

The phrase “Whatsoever is not of faith is sin” serves as a guiding principle for how we should live. Every action we take should be rooted in faith, governed by the Word of God, and led by the Holy Spirit. Living by faith means making decisions that align with God’s will and trusting Him fully in every situation.

The Importance of Faith in Healing

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus encountered numerous people seeking healing. Their questions reveal common concerns about God’s ability and willingness to heal. Let’s explore three significant questions people asked Jesus concerning healing and how His responses can strengthen our faith.

1. Can God Heal? (Mark 9:17-27)

In Mark 9:17-27, a father brings his son to Jesus, seeking healing. He asks, “If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” Jesus responds, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

This interaction emphasizes the power of faith (Believe: Pisteuo; verb). Jesus affirms that belief is the key to unlocking God’s miraculous power. When we ask, “Can God heal?” we must remember that all things are possible through faith in Him.

2. Is God Willing? (Mark 1:40-42)

In Mark 1:40-42, a leper approaches Jesus and says, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” Jesus, moved with compassion, replies, “I am willing; be cleansed.”

Here, Jesus directly addresses the question of God’s willingness to heal. His response is clear and compassionate: God is indeed willing to heal. This assurance helps us to approach God with confidence, knowing His heart is inclined toward our well-being. It also shows us that there is no unwillingness in Him when it comes to healing us.

3. Will I Be Healed? (John 5:2-9)

At the Pool of Bethesda, a man who had been ill for 38 years encounters Jesus. In John 5:6, Jesus asks him, “Do you want to be made well?” The man explains his predicament, and Jesus commands him to rise, take up his bed, and walk, resulting in his immediate healing.

This narrative demonstrates that Jesus not only has the power and willingness to heal but also the desire to see us whole. When we question, “Will I be healed?” we should hold onto the truth that Jesus is both able and eager to heal the individual just as much as the crowds in Matthew 12:15.

Big Idea: Purposeful Faith

Developed faith can be used on purpose to attain what is needed for life. Our faith must grow and mature through continuous trust in God and His promises. As we face life’s challenges, let us remember Jesus’ words in Mark 11:22, “Have faith in God.” In the references of the Scofield Study Bible, it shows that the phrase in Greek is, “The Faith of God.” By switching the subject and object of this statement, it changes the purpose and usage of faith in this verse. It makes faith something that we don’t just express, but something that we mimic. So, what are we mimicking? We are mimicking steadfastness, immutability, resilience, patience, and other divine attributes. If we seek this life of total grace and surrender, then we can navigate our lives with confidence, knowing that we are walking in the very faith of God.

Reflection Questions:

  • What areas of your life are you struggling to trust God with?
  • How can you cultivate a deeper faith in God’s ability and willingness to meet your needs?

By embracing these truths and living by faith, we align ourselves with God’s will, experience His miraculous power, and lead lives that glorify Him.
